Producer Donald Cameron Clark, Jr. and Executive Producer Laura Stanczyk announced today that Another Shot, a comedy by Spike Manton and Harry Teinowitz, will make its New York debut at The Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre at the Pershing Square Signature Theatre (480 West 42nd Street) this fall. Performances begin on October 15, opening night is October 29, and runs through November 17th, 2024. Dan Butler (“Frasier,” “Roseanne”) stars as Harry.

Tickets will be available starting today at anothershotplay.com .

Another Shot was titled When Harry Met Rehab during a 2021 Chicago run, where it received a Joseph Jefferson Award nomination for Best New Work. It is not a production of Signature Theatre.

I am SO excited to see more storytelling entertainment about addiction hit the theater stage. You may remember that we also featured a recent production on the West Coast by Greg Ostrin, The Spy Who Went to Rehab. Additionally, I had the chance to review two other shows earlier this year in New York—Days of Wine and Roses by Craig Lucas and The White Chip, Sean Daniels’ autobiographical comedy. Shows like these raise awareness around a topic that affects so many. And by many, I can back that up with hard stats. According to a 2023 SAMHSA survey, 20.9 million adults (72.2%) who have ever had a substance use problem consider themselves to be in recovery. Additionally, 38.8 million adults (66.5%) who have ever had a mental health issue also consider themselves to be in recovery.

Another shot is a humorous and heartfelt ode to recovery and the community that makes it possible. It is based loosely on the real-life experiences of Chicago sports radio personality Harry Teinowitz, whose career and life were put in jeopardy following an arrest for DUI. Co-written by former ESPN personality and playwright Spike Manton (Leaving Iowa), Another Shot tells the outrageous, infuriating, and hilarious story of an alcoholic on the edge of blowing up his life when he finally confronts the inarguable truth of his behavior and how it is affecting his family, his life, and his liver.

The cast is Dan Butler (Harry); Chiké Johnson (Vince); Samantha Mathis (Andrea); Gregg Mozgala (Isaiah); Quentin Nguyễn-duy (George); and Portia (Barb). Jackson Gay directs.

The company is completed by T.J. Mannix (Harry/Vince understudy); Zuleyma Guevara (Barb/Andrea understudy); and Neil Redfield (Isiah/George understudy).

The creative team is Beowulf Boritt (scenic design), Mextly Couzin (lighting design), Daniel Baker (sound design), Stefania Bulbarella (projection design), and Alejo Vietti (costume design).

The stage manager is Avery Trunko, and the assistant stage manager is Rodrigo Herrera.

“Funny, gutsy, dark, yet strikingly comedic.”

Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune

“It has poignancy, humor and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Steve Heisler, Chicago Sun Times

“Meaningful, funny and emotional.”

Alan Bresloff, Around the Town Chicago

Spike Manton (Co-writer) turned to standup comedy after college. He worked all over the country and appeared on seven national TV shows. Comedy opened the door to radio, and Spike hosted the afternoon show on ESPN Radio in Chicago with his good friend Harry Teinowitz. While on the radio, Spike wrote his first play with Tim Clue, Leaving Iowa, which premiered at Jeff Daniels’ Purple Rose Theater and was nominated for Best New Play. About five years ago, Harry brought Spike the first 100 pages of his working book about his eight weeks in rehab. They decided to turn it into a play, and given their shared history in standup and recovery, a comedy about rehab was created. They were fortunate to connect with Don Clark, who somehow produced a magical premiere run in Chicago in the post-pandemic chaos and is now taking the show to New York. Spike still lives outside Chicago near his two children, Mickey, and Samantha, with his wife of 35 happy years, Tami.

Harry Teinowitz (Co-writer) spent 25 years co-hosting some of the most highly acclaimed sports radio shows on Chicago’s marquee stations. In addition, Harry toured the United States for seven years as a stand-up comic. He co-starred in the cult movie classic Mad Magazine Presents: Up the Academy and was featured in Risky Business, The Package, and Return to Me. Harry’s play offers an intensely personal and self-deprecating peek into the harsh reality of his addiction rehab journey. As it turns out, both honesty and humor play leading roles in both achieving and maintaining sobriety. According to Harry, if he can do it, anyone can!
