Shining Light on Addiction, Recovery & the Systems That Shape Them

In the latest episode of the Sober Not Mature podcast, hosts Mike and Bill sit down with Benjamin Flaherty — an award-winning, Austin-based filmmaker whose work spans documentary, art cinema, and major commercial projects. What makes this episode truly compelling isn’t just Flaherty’s creative résumé, but the purpose behind his recent documentary Shuffle and what it reveals about addiction and recovery.

    A Filmmaker on a Mission

Ben shares the story of how he transitioned from commercial success — with projects featuring artists like Lou Reed and Julian Schnabel and award-winning PSA work — to creating Shuffle, his feature-length documentary that won the Grand Jury Prize for Best

    Feature at SXSW 2025.

The documentary isn’t just a personal project — it’s a conversation starter. Shuffle delves into the opaque world of addiction treatment, exposing how families often encounter the system only in crisis, blind to its complexities, economic pressures, and inequities. As highlighted in broader coverage of Ben’s work, the film brings to light the emotional pain many families carry — often believing their child’s struggles were somehow their fault — until they see patterns reflected back to them through others’ stories.

    Breaking Down the System

During the podcast, Ben and the hosts unpack Shuffle’s core themes:

    • How the treatment industry operates, including the role of insurance, profit incentives, and the confusion families face when trying to find ethical, evidence-based care.
    • The power of storytelling in dismantling shame and fostering connection — something Ben emphasizes both in his film and in this conversation.
    • Recovery beyond the individual journey, exploring how cultural, economic, and systemic factors influence who gets support and how.

Rather than vilify individuals or institutions, Ben’s dialogue with Mike and Bill highlights context and complexity, urging listeners to look beyond simplistic narratives about addiction and recovery.

    Why This Episode Matters

This isn’t just another sobriety story. It’s a critical look at the systems surrounding addiction — ones that, until recently, have lived in the background of public awareness. By bringing a filmmaker’s lens to these issues, the episode bridges personal experience with cultural critique, making it essential listening for anyone interested in recovery, advocacy, and responsible storytelling.

Whether you come for the personal reflections or stay for the broader conversation about systems and stigma, Episode 205 stands out as a thought-provoking and deeply human installment in the Sober Not Mature catalog.

byJust a couple of sober guys, talking recovery. Instagram – @sobernotmature

This week it’s back to the guys that run this ship, Mike and Bill.

Mike started out with his reading and it was from the 24 Hour book this week. Old school book and it talked about hope, faith and the foundation that we build. It sparked a conversation about our time at the Keating Center and was just a good conversation in general.

We chatted about imposter syndrome, a podcast clip about statistics on social media (Bill commented on it and may have hurt their feelings), we may be putting out a story book and we talked about this thing we do as a disease.

We wrapped up with a short story about a phone that ended up in a creek.

    Enjoy the episode.
