Immersed in Recovery: A Sobering Encounter with “The White Chip” on Broadway

Stepping into The Susan & Ronald Frankel Theater at the Robert W. Wilson MCC Theater Space on a crisp February evening, the aura of intimacy enveloped me as I settled into the hushed embrace of the small theatre. It was Wednesday, February 14th, a date marked not by romantic gestures but by a profound exploration of addiction, resilience, and recovery in Sean Daniels’ autobiographical comedy, “The White Chip.” I had spent most of the day alone, taking in the sights and smells of New York City. Treating myself to this last Broadway show before I caught the train to Long Island, I was excited to witness for myself if the favorable reviews were accurate.

Starring the talented Joe Tapper and guided by the deft directorial hand of Tony Award® nominee Sheryl Kaller, this production delved deep into the heart of personal struggles with alcoholism, inviting the audience on a poignant journey through the peaks and valleys of addiction. The close proximity to the stage allowed every emotion, every sigh, and every tear to resonate with a raw authenticity, creating an immersive experience that transcended the confines of traditional theatrical performance. My eyes locked in with the main character Steven, played by Joe Tapper, on multiple occasions. I was completely invested in Steven getting sober as if I was with him myself.

As the critically acclaimed recovery comedy unfolded before my eyes, the words of praise from The New York Times and TheaterMania echoed in my mind, underscoring the profound impact of this production. The narrative, masterfully crafted by Sean Daniels, wove a tapestry of vulnerability and strength, illuminating the complexities of the human spirit in its quest for redemption.

Presented by an esteemed group of producers including Jason Biggs, John Larroquette, Hank Azaria, Annaleigh Ashford, recovery advocate Ryan Hampton, and The Recovery Project at Florida Studio Theatre, “The White Chip” not only entertained but also served as a beacon of hope and understanding for those navigating the turbulent waters of recovery.

As the laughter and tears intermingled in the intimate confines of the theatre, it became apparent that “The White Chip” was not just a play; it was a mirror reflecting the resilience, courage, and unwavering spirit of those on the path to sobriety. One that I have intimately experienced and witnessed over the last 18 years. This critically acclaimed gem is a must-see for anyone seeking a transcendent theatrical experience that touches the soul and ignites the flame of empathy and understanding. “The White Chip” is a testament to the power of storytelling, the resilience of the human spirit, and the transformative journey towards healing and self-discovery.

As “The White Chip” has concluded its run on Broadway, its impact lingers on, resonating with audiences who have witnessed the raw depiction of addiction and recovery. While the curtains may close on this chapter, I carry with me a fervent hope that this poignant production transcends the confines of New York City and finds its way to stages across the United States in the coming years.

The enduring truth remains – within the depths of addiction lies a profound narrative of resilience, redemption, and human connection. As I reflect on the powerful storytelling woven into the fabric of “The White Chip,” I hold onto the belief that its message of hope and transformation reaches those in need, guiding them towards a moment of surrender and the courageous steps towards healing. My prayers extend to all those grappling with the complexities of this disease, as they navigate the journey towards standing in the radiant light of the spirit, embraced by the solace of surrender and the promise of meaningful action.

    Celebrating Self-Discovery: A Solo Valentine’s Day Journey

As the vibrancy of a solo Valentine’s Day unfolded in 2024, I embraced the freedom that comes with both sobriety and singlehood, two facets of my identity that have shaped the last 18 years of my life. The realization that happiness thrives in the embrace of independence and self-love has transformed my perspective on solitude, turning what was once dreaded into a cherished opportunity for exploration and growth.

I started my day with a brunch at a lovely little diner a stone’s throw away from the 911 Memorial with friend Alexandra Nynman, Founder of the Break Free Foundation and Publisher of The Sober Curator. We were retelling stories from the fashion show earlier in the week over pancakes and coffee. Post breakfast and gossip, Alex walked me over to the One World Trade Center, showing me a secret spot with a view I could take a few work Zoom calls.

With work done for the day I headed to the lower east side. Channeling my inner Carrie Bradshaw, I immersed myself in the artistic wonders of Patricia Fields ARTFashion shop, where the fusion of art and fashion ignited a spark of creativity within me. Holding true to my No Spend Challenge of 2024, I managed to escape this hidden gem without any treasures. (It was NOT easy!) The Patricia Field ARTFashion Gallery is located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York. You can find it at 200 E Broadway, Ground Floor Ste 3d, New York, NY, 100021. This unique gallery is the home for one-of-a-kind painted upcycled garments by artists from all over the world, curated by the iconic Patricia Field herself. The gallery offers a variety of art pieces, blending fashion and creativity in the most exciting ways. If you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth a visit! ????????

With the city as my playground, I ventured through Brooklyn’s eclectic streets, seeking out the hidden treasures of street art that adorned the walls of Bushwick. Hunting for street art has become a hobby that I did not embrace before getting sober. Traveling pre-sober, usually meant I was too hung over to leave my hotel room or too busy pre-funking a pre-drunk warmup.

The day unfolded with a sense of serenity and purpose as I wandered through the bustling cityscape, savoring the moments of quiet introspection and unbridled discovery. Each step was a testament to the newfound appreciation for spontaneity and self-exploration, a journey guided by the whispers of curiosity and the echoes of creativity.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, I found myself standing at the threshold of the Fashion Institute of Technology Museum, a haven of inspiration and innovation that never failed to captivate my imagination. Surrounded by the intricate tapestries of design and the vibrant hues of artistic expression, I felt a profound sense of belonging and wonder.

In the gentle embrace of the evening, I reflected on the day’s adventures, realizing that the essence of a perfect day lay not in external validations but in the simple joy of embracing one’s own company. This Valentine’s Day was a celebration of self-discovery, a journey of vibrant colors, creative whispers, and quiet moments of introspection that illuminated the path to inner peace and contentment.

As I navigated the labyrinthine streets of NYC, I found love in the vibrant hues of street art, the creative energy that pulsed through the city, and the profound sense of self-assurance that blossomed with each step of the journey. This Valentine’s Day was a reminder that true love begins with oneself, in the quiet moments of reflection, the bursts of creativity, and the joy of embracing the boundless possibilities that come with solitude and self-discovery.
