Waking Up to the Truth: My Skin Was Screaming for Help

I used to think makeup could cover everything—dark circles, acne, dryness—but no concealer could hide the damage alcohol was doing to my skin. My skincare routine was nonexistent, my diet was a disaster, and my hydration levels were practically zero. I’d fall asleep in a full face of makeup, barely drink water, and fuel my body with Captain and Coke instead of real nourishment. My skin wasn’t just dull; it was desperate for change.
What I didn’t realize was that the real glow-up wouldn’t come from expensive serums or the latest beauty trends—it would come from quitting alcohol altogether. After years of neglect, I was ready to face my reality. The late nights and partying were not just impacting my skin; they were affecting my entire life. I knew I needed to make a change, but I had no idea how transformative that decision would turn out to be.

The Sobriety Glow-Up: What Changed?
Giving up alcohol didn’t just clear my mind—it cleared my skin, too. Here’s how ditching booze transformed my face (and my confidence):
1. Hydration: The Ultimate Glow Booster
Alcohol is wildly dehydrating. It strips your skin of moisture and leaves it looking lifeless. I was unintentionally drying my skin from the inside out, and no amount of moisturizer could fix that. I was in a constant battle against dryness, and it felt like I was losing.
When I got sober, I started drinking water like it was my job. I set reminders on my phone to ensure I was getting enough hydration throughout the day. And guess what? My skin responded almost immediately! It became softer, plumper, and way more radiant. If you want the glow, hydration is your best friend.
Along with drinking water, I also started incorporating hydration-focused skincare products, like hyaluronic acid serums and deep moisturizing creams, to give my skin an extra boost. Pairing hydration from the inside with quality products on the outside was the magic combo I never knew I needed.
And let’s not forget the lips, ladies! Crusty lips ain’t cute. I was out here walking around with the Sahara Desert on my mouth, thinking a little gloss would save me. Nope. Hydration is key, and if you need a little extra love, Tarte’s Maracuja Juicy Lip is the perfect subtle pop of color with hydration and plumpness.
Hydration doesn’t just stop at drinking water. I incorporated herbal teas, coconut water, and electrolyte-infused drinks to keep my body replenished. This made a huge difference in how my skin retained moisture and looked dewy instead of dull. The little things added up—drinking a glass of water before bed and sipping herbal tea in the morning became rituals I cherished.
I also began using facial mists throughout the day to keep my skin fresh. A good mist with ingredients like rose water, aloe, and glycerin helps seal in moisture while providing a dewy, refreshed look. It’s a small step, but it makes a noticeable difference. These practices turned hydration into a lifestyle rather than a chore.

2. Real Beauty Sleep Beats Drunken Sleep
Drunken sleep is not beauty sleep. I thought passing out at the end of the night was “rest,” but in reality, alcohol was disrupting my sleep cycles. I’d wake up exhausted, with puffy eyes, dull skin, and breakouts. I was trapped in a cycle where every night out led to a morning filled with regret and a face full of frustration.
Now, I prioritize deep, restorative sleep, and the difference is night and day. My dark circles have faded, my skin tone is more even, and I actually wake up looking refreshed (instead of like I lost a fight with my pillow). Sleep is essential for skin regeneration, and I learned that the quality of my rest significantly impacts my complexion.
I’ve also started using nighttime skincare treatments, like my favorite Medicube Collagen Night Wrapping Mask, which locks in moisture while I sleep. Waking up with soft, nourished skin has become my new normal. I can’t stress enough how important it is to invest in a nighttime routine that works for you.
Quality sleep has also improved my overall mood, reduced stress levels, and helped my skin fight off inflammation. I’ve learned that having a nighttime routine—such as dimming lights, limiting screen time, and using lavender essential oils—preps me for better sleep. These little rituals create a calming atmosphere that signals to my body that it’s time to unwind.
To take it up a notch, I invested in silk pillowcases. Cotton can be harsh on the skin, absorbing moisture and leaving sleep lines that turn into wrinkles over time. Silk helps skin retain its hydration and prevents friction that causes unnecessary irritation. Little things like this add up to big changes over time! The comfort of silk pillowcases also makes sleep feel like a luxurious experience.

3. A Skincare Routine That Actually Works
Before sobriety, my skincare routine was a joke. I’d crash with a full face of makeup, maybe wipe it off with a dry paper towel in the morning, and call it a day. No cleansing, no hydration, no protection—just vibes. I didn’t know the first thing about taking care of my skin, and it showed.
Now, I have a solid skincare routine that actually works, and let me tell you, it’s a game-changer! Here’s what’s in my lineup:
- Zero Foam Cleanser** – A deep cleanse without stripping my skin.
- PDRN Toner** – Hydrates and preps my skin for the next steps.
- Zero Exosome Shot 7500** – Helps with skin regeneration and healing.
- Choice of Collagen Niacinamide Jelly Cream or Deep Vita C Capsule Cream** – Both amazing for hydration and brightening.
- Collagen Night Wrapping Mask** – Seals in moisture while I sleep.
- PDRN PINK Collagen Overnight Gel Mask** – Extra nourishment for baby-soft skin.
As a mixed girl—Black and white—finding the right skincare and haircare has been a journey. Some products have literally bleached my skin in spots, while others left me dry and flaky. The struggle is real, but with patience and hydration, I’ve found what works for me.
I spent time researching ingredients and reading reviews to create a routine tailored specifically to my skin’s needs. I learned to listen to my skin and adjust my routine based on how it felt. It’s all about being in tune with your body and understanding what it craves.

4. A Diet That Feeds My Skin, Not Drains It
Instead of fueling my body with sugar-laden cocktails, I focus on whole foods, vitamins, and healthy fats that nourish my skin from the inside out. I load up on:
- Omega-3s** from salmon and chia seeds
- Leafy greens** for antioxidants
- Hydrating fruits** like watermelon and cucumbers
- Collagen-rich bone broth**
By eliminating alcohol, I also cut down on sugar spikes, which reduced acne flare-ups and breakouts. My energy levels skyrocketed, and my body felt more balanced overall. The food I consumed became another layer of self-care, and I found joy in preparing healthy meals that nourished my body.
I also learned about the importance of gut health, which plays a critical role in skin health. Incorporating probiotics and prebiotics into my diet helped improve my digestion, leading to clearer skin. I became more mindful of what I put into my body, realizing that my skin reflects my overall health.
Meal prepping became a game-changer for me. I would dedicate Sundays to planning and preparing my meals for the week, ensuring I had access to healthy options. This not only saved me time during busy weekdays but also kept me accountable for making better choices. I experimented with new recipes, discovering how delicious healthy eating could be, and I loved sharing these culinary adventures on social media.

5. Makeup as an Enhancement, Not a Mask
I still love makeup, but now it’s an extension of self-care, not a cover-up. Instead of layering on concealer to hide alcohol-induced redness and breakouts, I use makeup to enhance my naturally glowing skin. And honestly? Less makeup means less clogged pores, which means even better skin. Win-win!
My favorite makeup brands are Tarte and Nyx because they include skincare benefits in their products. These brands help maintain hydration and nourish my skin while providing great coverage. And when it comes to prepping my skin, Elf primer is my holy grail. It contains blemish-protectant ingredients that keep breakouts at bay while giving me a smooth canvas for my makeup.
I’ve learned how to choose makeup that complements my skin rather than just masking imperfections. A tinted moisturizer or BB cream has become my go-to for daily wear, offering a light layer of coverage while allowing my skin to breathe. This shift in mindset has allowed me to feel more confident in my natural beauty.
I also invested in quality makeup brushes and tools, understanding that the right application can make all the difference. Clean brushes not only ensure better results but also prevent bacteria buildup that can lead to breakouts. I make it a point to clean my brushes regularly, and it’s become a part of my self-care routine.

The Science Behind Alcohol’s Effect on Skin
Alcohol dehydrates your body, including your skin. This lack of hydration can lead to:
- Increased fine lines and wrinkles
- A dull, lifeless complexion
- Redness and inflammation due to blood vessel dilation
- Increased oil production (hello, acne!)
It also strips your body of essential nutrients, like vitamin A (which is crucial for skin regeneration) and vitamin C (which helps with collagen production). So, every drink you take is basically speeding up the aging process. Not cute!
I didn’t realize the long-term effects alcohol had on my skin until I started doing research. The more I learned, the more motivated I became to stay sober. I wanted to give my skin the best chance possible to heal and thrive. This knowledge empowered me to make choices that supported my well-being and enhanced my natural beauty.

The Emotional Impact of Sobriety on Beauty
Beyond the physical changes, sobriety has profoundly impacted my emotional well-being. I used to rely on alcohol as a crutch during social situations, thinking it helped me relax and fit in. But in reality, it only added to my anxiety and feelings of inadequacy. Now, I approach social situations with confidence, knowing that I don’t need alcohol to have a good time.
This newfound confidence radiates from within, making me feel more beautiful than ever. I’ve learned to embrace my quirks and imperfections. The journey has shown me that true beauty comes from self-acceptance and self-love, not from the external validation of others.
I’ve also become more intentional about surrounding myself with positive influences. I seek out relationships that uplift and inspire me, and I’ve distanced myself from those that drain my energy. This shift has created a supportive environment where I can thrive, both personally and in my beauty journey.
