‘Walking On Ice’: A Grit-Filled Journey by Real Survivors Across the Frozen Boundary Waters

Alysse BrysonBy Alysse BrysonDecember 4, 20252 Mins Read
Walking on Ice Documentary Recovery Beyond

Recovery Beyond’s new documentary ‘Walking On Ice’ is nothing short of a visceral, heart-thumping testament to what happens when recovery meets radical resilience. Following eight determined individuals as they train, sweat, stumble, and rise in pursuit of a coveted spot on an extreme five-day trek across the frozen lakes of Minnesota’s Boundary Waters, this film captures more than physical endurance—it captures the soul of transformation.

Led by seasoned outdoor experts and an unstoppable team of sled dogs, the journey becomes a metaphor for recovery itself: cold, demanding, uncertain, and yet profoundly beautiful. Each contender carries their own history of struggle, and what unfolds is a raw and deeply human portrait of grit in its purest form. Director Dru Solberg blends breathtaking cinematography with intimate storytelling, reminding us that hope is not something quietly reclaimed—it’s fought for with trembling hands, tired muscles, and unbreakable spirit.

This project—brought to life by Executive Producer Bill Goodgion, Producer Megan Wright (also a Sober Curator Contributor), Co-Producer Mark Adams, and beautifully shot by Solberg and Dennis Gazhenko—is a powerful celebration of community, connection, and outdoor adventure as a pathway to recovery. It’s a story for anyone who has ever felt lost, and for everyone who understands that healing doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens in motion.

The Sober Curator applauds Recovery Beyond for continuing to redefine what recovery can look like. Their work proves, once again, that when we step outside—literally and figuratively—we give ourselves the chance to step back into life. If you are local to the Pacific NW, check out the next free screening in North Bend on Saturday, December 13, 2025.
