Amidst the fervent buzz of New York Fashion Week, designer Tyrone Chablis stood as a visionary, presenting his thought-provoking collection “Armageddon” at Break Free on February 12th, 2024. As I sipped my Red Bull, Chablis unveiled his latest collection, a synthesis of eco conscious couture and storytelling through fashion.

“Fashion is about not being afraid; it is about being bold. You make a statement when you have something to say with your wardrobe. When it comes to putting clothes on my clothes are not easy. When you put them on you have to have confidence.   Its strong design and either the design is going to outweigh you or your going to outweigh it. Sometimes clothes can be so powerful that it intimidates people!”

Tyrone Chablis

His commitment to using upcycled fabrics to minimize waste epitomizes his dedication to responsible design. “I like to think of it as sustainable couture,” he says.

Chablis’s collection echoed an attitude of seizing the moment with unparalleled elegance despite the tumultuous backdrop. The runway came alive with a captivating mélange of patterns and designs, ranging from impressionist art to daring camouflage, interwoven with striking overlays of black and fishnet. It was a fusion of street-savvy edginess and intricate sophistication with every stride.

One ensemble in particular, a distressed black pantsuit paired with a striking gas mask, stood as a poignant statement against the perils of fast fashion and its environmental impact. It resonated deeply with me, a stark reminder of today’s urgent need for conscious consumption.

Chablis’s distinguished artistry was recently celebrated at the Newark Museum of Art, where his contributions to the local fashion sphere were honored. As a product of the Traphagen School of Design in NYC, Chablis has emerged as a luminary in the tri-state area, consistently bringing light to the fabric of fashion over his past twenty years as a designer. His unwavering commitment to his community and craft affirms his status as a beacon of creativity and compassion.

Reflecting on his journey, Chablis said, “I’ve been doing this since the eighties—pretty much all my life. I keep trying to evolve in this process.” His innate ability to provoke contemplation through fashion is remarkable, articulating narratives that transcend mere aesthetics and impel meaningful introspection.

Chablis’ deep connection with the young talents involved in his project was palpable as he recounted the impact of his designs on their spirits, and vice versa. His collaboration with the Just US Teenz Foundation, an organization dedicated to empowering young voices, exemplifies his commitment to young creatives. Watching Tyrone mentor these young creatives as he encouraged them was a testament to the transformative power of fashion as a vessel for empowerment and self-expression.

“You know, you don’t realize how many of those kinds of mentor guides God puts in the path of your journey. Now that I think about all those people along the way the different programs, the affiliations with the different artists that supported. Those people that want to help you get where you’re going.”

Tyrone Chablis

“Armageddon”, Chablis’ latest collection was a masterful tapestry of innovation, a proclamation that transcended the confines of traditional fashion. It posed questions that didn’t demand answers but ignited dialogue, inviting us to contemplate resilience, strength, and what it looks like to emerge from adversity.

In a world enshrouded by uncertainty and upheaval this collection is a testament to fashion’s enduring power. As we bid farewell to the spectacle of fashion week, one thing remains abundantly clear—Chablis’ “Armageddon” sparked conversations, stirred emotions, and reaffirmed the indomitable spirit of fashion as a catalyst for change. Chablis will return to the runway with Break Free on Saturday, September 7th during New York Fashion Week.
