Sober Journeys: A Cozy Encounter with Fuego Volcano in Guatemala

Have you ever dreamt of witnessing the raw power of a volcano up close without the grueling hours of hiking? If so, let me share an unforgettable experience at Fuego Volcano in Guatemala, where I discovered a unique way to marvel at its majestic eruptions without breaking a sweat.

My journey to Fuego Volcano began with a reservation through Wicho and Charlies, a reputable tour company known for its excellent service. Booking in advance is crucial, especially if you’re eyeing one of their cozy two-person cabins near the volcano’s base. Trust me; the early bird catches the best accommodations.

After securing our spot, we took a thrilling 40-minute ride up the rugged mountain terrain in a 4×4 vehicle. The journey was bumpy, but anticipating what awaited us overshadowed any discomfort. Upon reaching the designated drop-off point, we faced a manageable 20% hike to our final destination. There is an option to hire a porter for your larger backpack, but we found it manageable for the 40-60-minute hike with places to stop along the way.

Arriving a few hours ahead of the crowd, we savored the tranquility of the camp as our cabin was prepared. Sober Curator Pro Tip: take advantage of this downtime to rest and nap, for the real spectacle begins after nightfall. As darkness descended, Fuego revealed its awe-inspiring display of fiery eruptions, painting the sky with hues of orange and red. It’s a surreal experience, one that words can hardly capture.

Facilities at the camp are basic but functional. A makeshift outhouse serves its purpose, though it’s wise to pack hand sanitizer for added hygiene as none is provided. Set your expectations at a minimum. It has four walls and a toilet seat, and it does not smell great, but it’s still better than digging a hold in the middle of the night.  Meals are vegan, a commendable choice considering the remote location. However, if you have a sensitive stomach, bringing snacks is advisable to avoid discomfort.

Remember to stash meds for any unexpected conditions (stomach ache, nausea, headaches) because you never know what might pop up at altitude on the mountain. We found Nuun hydration tablets to be a lifesaver—just add them to your water for an instant boost.

The following morning, we rose before dawn to witness the sunrise, a sight that left us breathless. While some opted for an evening hike, feedback from fellow travelers led us to stay cozy in our cabin, shielded from the chilly winds. It’s worth noting that February might not be the best time for the morning sunrise hike with 360 views or the nighttime Fuego hike to see the lava up close; based on what we heard from others who braved the extreme weather, conditions may vary depending on the season.

Accommodation options range from communal cabins to private retreats, with early birds snagging the best views. Our decision to splurge on a private two-person cabin paid off, offering intimacy and unparalleled vistas of the volcano’s fiery spectacle.

Reflecting on the experience, I realized a few items would have enhanced our adventure: binoculars for closer observation, additional hand sanitizer, and my professional camera with a zoom lens to capture every detail. However, the camp provided essential amenities like warm clothing, water, and hiking gear for rent, easing any worries about preparedness.

For those unaware of the drive-up option, it’s a game-changer, offering a more comfortable alternative to the arduous hike. While the trail itself isn’t remarkable, the summit’s payoff makes it all worthwhile.

In conclusion, witnessing the majesty of Fuego Volcano from the comfort of a well-appointed cabin is an experience like no other. Whether you choose to hike or drive, the opportunity to witness nature’s fury in all its splendor is a privilege not to be missed. So, pack your essentials, book early, and prepare for an adventure that will leave you in awe of the Earth’s wonders.
