Recovery Beyond Sober October Events In Washington State 2022

Sober October is here! It’s always the perfect day for a perfect sober day. The opposite of addiction is connection and what better way to get connected this Fall than with events from Recovery Beyond?

About Recovery Beyond

The mission of Recovery Beyond is to empower individuals to achieve long term recovery through a supportive community that enables goal setting, lifelong learning and healthy lifestyles.

Recovery Beyond was created in 2016 as a non-profit organization with the purpose of multiplying the impact discovered on Mt. Rainier. Recovery Beyond’s peer-driven model works in partnership with treatment programs and community partners to provide additional, critical success factors for long-term recovery:

  1. health – tools for learning to manage the symptoms of substance use disorder and making positive behavioral choices;
  2. purpose – meaningful activities that allow exploration of interests and development of life goals; and
  3. community – a network of recovering individuals and their allies who offer support, encouragement, and hope.

The critical elements of recovery are met. There is external supervision and support outside of treatment. Vigorous physical activity and exercise-driven endorphins provide a healthy and pro-social behavioral alternative. Participants also enjoy a close-knit community, forming new and positive relationships that last a lifetime. The long-term goals with a sense of accomplishment, opportunities for growth, and engagement in a community of service help provide a purpose. We know that when these exist, long-lasting recovery is possible.

Sober October Events In Washington State 2022

Recovery Hike Talapus & Olallie Lakes

October 8 @ 8:00 am – 3:00 pm PDT

  • Length: 6.2 miles round trip
  • Elevation Gain: 1220 feet
  • Highest Point: 3780 feet
  • Lead: Kayla Estes
  • Parking Pass: NW Forest Pass (we have some to borrow)
  • Need a ride? Email ematthews@recoverybp.org

WTA aptly describes the trail this way, “With a moderate grade on a wide trail, the hike to Talapus Lake is the perfect introduction to the outdoors for hikers and beginning backpackers. Upon arrival at Talapus, break out lunch or pitch camp. If you feel like pressing on, Olallie Lake is just about a mile and a half up trail, where open campsites offer lakeside havens with calm waters and views of a beautiful lake basin.”

Though this hike is 6.2 miles round trip, its 1,220 elevation gain starts out mild surrounded by trees. The trail does steepen quite quickly but on a wide trail with plenty of views of the Talapus Creek flowing below to stop and take it in. So plan for a medium length hike with switchbacks that lead to a gorgeous view of Olallie Lake!

Learn more here: https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/talapus-and-olallie-lakes#hike-trailhead-and-map

Directions: (Parking is at Talapus Lake Trailhead Parking Lot and requires a NW Forest Pass)

From Seattle, head east on I-90 to exit 45. Turn left, and drive under the freeway on FR 9030. In 1 mile follow the road around to the right at a junction. Continue straight on a gravel, sometimes severely potholed road to the trailhead at the road’s end. A Northwest Forest Pass is required to park here (these are not available for purchase at the trailhead). Also, please complete a self-issued wilderness permit at the trailhead kiosk before starting your hike.

Corn Maze Race and Scarecrow Hunt After Dark!

October 14 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm PDT

Muddy Boots Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze

Can you and your group find 10 scarecrows hidden in an 8-acre corn maze?

Can you do it after dark with only a flashlight?!

Prove it!

In the spirit of October adventure — you are invited to join us for our monthly community event at no cost!

First, we’ll do a corn maze race and scarecrow hunt after dark with just a flashlight. And then we’ll gather around the fire pit with s’mores, kettle corn, and apple cider!

  • 7:30pm — Meet at the farm entrance to pick up your free pass to the corn maze
  • 7:45pm — Split into teams
  • 8:00pm — Start the corn maze race and scarecrow hunt!
  • 8:45pm — Gather around the fire pit for food and relaxing fun

Open to participants, families, friends, as well as anyone new — we bring our community playfully together celebrating the joy of hopeful, healing recovery rooted in health and wholeness!

Our activities and events are at no cost — we just ask that you register, arrive on time, and be ready for some fun!

Check out https://muddybootspumpkins.com for more information on the farm.

Location: 15505 W Snoqualmie River Rd NE Duvall, WA

King County Community Event – Circus Arts at Versatile Arts!

October 16 @ 6:15 pm – 7:45 pm PDT

Join Recovery Beyond at Versatile Arts for a class on aerial and circus arts! Have you ever tried aerial arts? It involves using two lengths of fabric secured from the ceiling while you use your strength to climb and maneuver the silks. This event is beginner friendly! Under careful instruction, you’ll learn how to wrap the silks around your body and practice new poses.

Each registrant will need to complete an online waiver. The following link takes you to the
website homepage and the waiver is a purple button at the bottom right of the page: https://www.versatilearts.net/

What To Bring / Wear
The main things you need are a water bottle, appropriate clothing, and a sense of adventure!

Please wear snug-fitting clothing that covers your midsection and all the way down your leg. Thick yoga tights/leggings are better than loose-fitting yoga pants. (You can wear shorts over the leggings if you want.) However, don’t wear tights/leggings that are slippery. If they’re pretty shiny, they are likely pretty slippery.
Make sure your shirt fits snugly enough that it will stay in place when you invert. (Or wear one you can tuck in.) Layers are useful. Make sure your clothing has no zippers, belts, studs, or anything else that could catch on the equipment. We will ask you to remove all watches, rings, large earrings, etc, so you might want to leave your valuables in the car or at home to make sure you don’t leave things at the studio. Please avoid using lotions, oils, or heavy perfumes before coming to the studio.

Be rested.
Be fed – but not too much! A recent banana, 1/2 a sandwich, or an energy bar in your belly is
perfect.
Be hydrated. Again, bring a water bottle with you to class.

Be excited. . . and relaxed! Know that your instructor is not going to ask you to do anything you
are not comfortable with.

Power of Peers – Recovery Speaker Series

October 21 @ 6:15 am – 7:45 pm PDT

WA SPEAKS (Statewide Peer Engagement and Advocacy Keynote Speakers)
is a new collaborative dedicated to sharing recovery stories. We are a cadre
of speakers that want to share our hope and resilience with the community in
an attempt to shatter the stigma surrounding behavioral health stressors
and spread the word that people can and do recover.

Join Recovery Beyond as we listen in on the Speaker Series and discuss with each other how the messages impacted us. Speakers will share first and Recovery Beyond Participants will discuss our thoughts as a group afterward.

Join the Recovery Beyond meeting first. Once we are on the call and have opening dialogue, we will tune into the Speaker Series.
