In the serene countryside of Watertown, Minnesota, a unique healing sanctuary is redefining the recovery experience through the power of nature, animals, and holistic practices. Serenity Farm and Stables, founded in April 2023, has quickly become a beacon of hope for those seeking alternative paths to wellness and sobriety.
A Vision Rooted in Holistic Healing
The founder of Serenity Farm and Stables brings over 30 years of experience working with individuals facing various forms of suffering. As a holistic health nurse at the Pride Institute since 2009, she has developed a deep understanding of the complex nature of addiction and healing.
“I believe that addiction comes from a combination of generational trauma, suppressed emotion, and genetic challenges,” she explains. “All these challenges individually and collectively lead to chemical disruption in our bodies’ ability to make and maintain the balance of neurotransmitters. As such, addiction is a desire to numb and escape intolerable suffering.”
This comprehensive understanding informs the farm’s approach to recovery — one that acknowledges there is no “one size fits all” solution to healing. Instead, Serenity Farm offers multiple modalities that clients can explore on their journey toward wellness.
Nature as Medicine
What sets Serenity Farm and Stables apart is its embrace of the healing power of the natural world. The property features forest paths for walking meditation, organic gardens that connect visitors to the earth, and even an apiary program where clients can learn about beekeeping and honey production.
“We provide equine-assisted therapy, ecotherapy, and understanding the healing benefits of connection with nature through our forest, organic gardens, and bees/hives,” the founder shares.
This nature-based approach, often referred to as ecotherapy, recognizes that human beings have an innate connection to the natural world — one that modern life usually severs. By rebuilding this connection, clients at Serenity Farm experience a form of healing that transcends traditional clinical settings.

The Healing Power of Horses
Equine-assisted therapy is at the heart of Serenity Farm’s program. The farm’s horses serve as intuitive co-therapists, offering clients unique opportunities for emotional growth and self-discovery.
The founder notes, “Serenity Farm and Stables provides a space where one can feel truly seen and heard by our staff and animals/herd.”
Horses are particularly effective therapeutic partners because they mirror human emotions without judgment. Their size and power also create opportunities for clients to build trust and overcome fears in a supportive environment. The farm offers both group and individual equine therapy sessions and equine Reiki, a gentle energy healing practice performed in the presence of horses.
A Multifaceted Approach to Recovery
Beyond nature and equine therapy, Serenity Farm incorporates numerous holistic practices to address healing on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels. The founder has worked diligently to understand and learn the many ways one can find peace, including homeopathy, microcurrent, nutrition, micronutrition, herbalism, aromatherapy, and sound therapy with singing bowls. Weekly sobriety groups and day and weekend recovery retreats provide ongoing support for those on their healing journey.
The founder’s passion for health and healing began in early childhood, where she always recognized the benefits of connection, community, belonging, nature, and animals in the path to wellness and feelings of wholeness. With this understanding, she hopes clients who find their way to Serenity Farm sense her compassion, curiosity, and desire to inspire hope in their recovery. She believes that only when we explore the whole body through a mind, body, and spirit connection can we uncover and bring forth healing to the soul.
When asked about her favorite recovery book, the founder simply answers, “Louise Hay. ” Her work has inspired countless individuals on their healing journeys.
Community as Foundation
In addition to these individual healing practices, the founder emphasizes that true recovery also flourishes through connection and community. “The foundation of healing lies in the experience of belonging to something outside of ourselves. Finding and belonging to a community of safety and connection is key on the path to sobriety and healing.”
This philosophy is embedded in every aspect of Serenity Farm. The retreats and weekly sobriety groups create opportunities for meaningful connection, while the staff and environment foster a sense of unconditional acceptance.
“The feedback from clients is that often it is a first time to experience such a loving and connected sober community,” the founder shares proudly.
Partnerships for Accessibility
Recognizing that financial constraints can limit access to alternative therapies, Serenity Farm partners with Hope Through Horses, a nonprofit organization that provides subsidized financial support to applicants. They also work with Homeopathic Integration for the People, which provides homeopathic care to those in need.
These partnerships reflect the founder’s commitment to making holistic healing accessible to a broader community of individuals seeking recovery.

A Sacred Space of Hope
As Serenity Farm and Stables approaches their second anniversary, the founder remains deeply committed to her original vision: “It is my core vision to provide a sacred space of hope and healing to those drawn to our healing farm. I want to attract those souls that are experiencing suffering on the levels of mind, body, and spirit and encourage them to join our community groups, individual, couple, or family sessions to find empowerment, emotional release, and healing with our herd.”
The founder has been teaching holistic principles to the recovery community since 2009, most recently in the equine/ecopsychology arena, and loves bringing all the pieces together to provide clients with an incredible sober experience where they feel unconditional love and support from the animals, the land, and the staff. Suffering exists on the physical, spiritual, and emotional levels, and each level must be addressed for holistic healing and peace to occur.
In a recovery landscape that often focuses solely on abstinence and behavioral modification, Serenity Farm and Stables offers something different — a holistic approach that honors the whole person and recognizes the healing potential of connection, nature, and community.
For those seeking an “out of the ordinary” path to sobriety and healing, this serene corner of Minnesota may just provide the transformation they’re looking for.
