Classy Problems is a daily post of thinking in motion by Dan T. Rogers. Each post stands alone as a thought-provoking piece, yet together, they create a puzzle of ideas. They invite you to see things from a different angle, rethink what you thought you knew, and explore what’s beyond your current understanding.
Classy has a membership feature! We have a growing collection of Classy’s daily emails, discussion recordings, and a dictionary of concepts. Free for now. Maybe paid later. Always thoughtful. Aligning What and Why
Function is what something does.
Purpose is why it exists.
How well does what you’re doing reflect your why?

Sequence Dictates
The value of any action is informed by what comes before it.
A truth told out of sequence can lead to misunderstanding. A good idea provided at the wrong time can be a distraction.
Order matters. Outcomes depend on it. Sequence clarifies intention, aligns impact, and builds coherence.
That’s why we prioritize and how we put things in order.
What are you doing right now but in the wrong order?

There’s No Free Lunch
We don’t get nothing for nothing. We’re either paying someone to do the work or we’re paying in our effort to do the work.
I’m either going to pay someone to mow my lawn or I’m going to pay with my time and energy to mow the lawn. Either way, the lawn gets cut and the cost gets paid. There’s no free lawn and no free lunch. We’re either paying in doing the work or we’re paying not to do the work.
It’s not a punishment. It’s a pattern. One that reveals how we value attention, time, and effort.
We call this a post-survival design and a classy problem: choosing what kind of bill we’re willing to pay.
Do your bills align with how you value attention, time, and effort?

Big Egos Command Small Structures
They have to. It’s a paradox and a truth.
The bigger part of something I am, the smaller it is.
When we make ourselves the main character in a room, role, or relationship, the space is constrained by our potential. Our ego demands control, credit, and comfort. When we choose to be a part of something bigger, the space is constrained by the thing that is bigger than us.
That’s also a truth. It is, after all, bigger than us.
Choosing to be a part of and contributing to something bigger than us doesn’t make us smaller. It makes our impact larger.
Where are you trying to be the biggest part of something that could have a larger impact if you were smaller?

Results Are Above Our Pay Grade
A result isn’t just an outcome. It is a reflection of effort and intention. Results are the final evaluation of what was achieved, the quality of the alignment with our intentions, and the byproduct of our efforts — revealing both intended and unintended consequences.
Therein lies the rub: intended and unintended.
Results are above our pay grade. It is in our actions that we have agency, not results.
Results are where we see the impact of our choices and how to guide future efforts.
What are your results reflecting about your actions?

State of Being
A state of being is the demonstration of how we show up in reality.
Being is where alignment lives. It’s where our thoughts, plans, and actions confront reality.
A state of being is how we have framed our right answer in the moment.
What is your current state of being informing you of what you think is right?

Today’s Average is Extraordinary
At one point in time, average paid well. It was the standard.
We used to make a good living on average. Show up, follow the directions, do the right thing.
That was great while it lasted and while it worked. Many found meaning and purpose in it.
Extraordinary, although hard to obtain, paid even better for its effort. Many found meaning and purpose in that as well.
In a world of increasing complexity, of too much toomuchness, it’s never been easier to be extraordinary.
Average now comes at the cost of being irrelevant and guaranteeing the loss of living a life of meaning and purpose.
Extraordinary is the new standard.
Where are you confusing yesterday’s extraordinary with today’s average?

What is a classy problem?
A classy problem is when we’ve been afforded the opportunity to figure out what to do. When faced with classy problems, it is more effective to focus on what NOT to do than trying to figure out what to do. In a word – restraint. Join us in exploring the distinction between what to do and what not to do in the pursuit of clarity.
