Classy Problems is a daily post of thinking in motion by Dan T. Rogers. Each post stands alone as a thought-provoking piece, yet together, they create a puzzle of ideas. They invite you to see things from a different angle, rethink what you thought you knew, and explore what’s beyond your current understanding.

Classy isn’t just a read: it’s a practice. Read, listen, and join us for Classy Problems Live, a 15-minute, live virtual conversation held Monday through Thursday at 12:15 p.m. PT, where we gather to reflect on the Classy Problems post of the day. No need to prep. Just connect, explore, and reflect.

The Scoreboard Says I’m Losing

I didn’t choose the standard.
I know it though.
Hit the mark. Stay ahead. Don’t stop.
I say I don’t care about comparison.
Then when do I keep checking?
Keep measuring.
Keep feeling like I’m falling behind
in a race that I never meant to enter.
That’s the trap.
I am focused on a metric that keeps moving.
To a version of success that isn’t mine.
I had wins.
Made progress.
Felt real meaning.
I still felt behind.
Still felt late.
Still felt like I should be doing more.
The scoreboard doesn’t track growth.
It tracks pace.
It tracks perception.
It tracks everything I haven’t done yet.
That’s the score I inherited.
Perform well. Be liked. Win.
I don’t want to keep earning my own enufness.
I want to name my own game.
Then decide what it means to win it.

Holding It Together

I thought I was evolving.
I was managing the version of myself I’d already outgrown.
Still tracking it.
Still maintaining it.
Still keeping it alive.
I used to keep me safe.
That’s the hard part.
Letting go of what worked.
Even if it’s no longer working.
I noticed how much of my system was still built
around a pressure that doesn’t exist anymore.
The story changed.
I didn’t change the story about myself.
I stayed loyal to the loop that protected me.
To the cadence that made sense
when I needed it to.
Now it’s costing me.
Change isn’t a breakthrough.
It’s the courage to stop holding together
what no longer needs to be held.
To say: that story saved me.
It doesn’t serve me now.
I don’t need a new frame.
I need a new move.
I don’t have to be ready.
I don’t have to feel ready.
I have to be willing to leave the known.
Leave the certainty of I know.
Change doesn’t ask for permission.
It waits for my action.

Releasing Getting Better

I had the tools.
I captured the frameworks.
I was aware of my awareness.
Intentional with my words.
I could name the pattern.
Track the cycle.
Sound clear.
Sound ready.
I was still performing.
Still rehearsing.
Still trying to earn space
in a system I already belonged to.
I thought I was developing.
I was maintaining.
Refining a version of me
I no longer wanted to protect.
The truth is quieter:
I was still afraid.
Afraid to ask for help.
Afraid to pause.
Afraid to disappoint the player I became
in rooms I’d already outgrown.
I don’t want a life where I keep getting better
at staying the same.
I want the life that begins when I stop tracking the score.
When I drop the rule.
When I ask:
What gear do I want to be in?
Development isn’t always expansion.
Sometimes it’s releasing a version.
Of my script.
Of my preferences.
Of my actions.
I don’t change when I get it all right.
I change when I stop holding it together.

Now Available: Observations of a Sidekick – Why This Book?

I wanted to get it closer to right.
The title. The tone. The truth.
A beginning. A place to begin.
A demonstration.
A chance to say:
Here’s what we believe.
Here’s how we behave.
Here’s what it looks like
to develop a life around restraint.
As honest and
as perfectly imperfect
as I can.
Moment by moment.
These are some of those moments.
Moments of clarity.
Moments of choice.
Moments of leverage.
Moments that asked more from us.
More intention.
More vulnerability.
More precision.
We gave it.
This isn’t a bestseller.
This is likely to only reach five people.
For those five,
we are hoping it will be unmistakable.
Unforgettable. Unseeable.
This is a source text.
This is what we believe to be true.
No hacks, rules, or answers.
These are our observations.
Hard-won.
Earned.
Lived.
Held with restraint.
Offered for your consideration.
We’re not promising better answers.
We’re suggesting better questions.
That feels like a good place to start.
A humble “I don’t know,”
paired with the clearest demonstration
of what we do believe to be true.

Available for purchase HERE.

Drowning in Certainty

I wasn’t managing time. I was drowning in it.
I told myself I needed a better system.
I needed less self-deception.
Thinking I could do it all.
Planning to do it all.
Acting like overwhelm was a scheduling issue.
I called it discipline.
Called it productivity.
Called it efficiency.
It was collapse. With nice formatting.
I kept chasing certainty.
When what was missing was clarity.
I burned out.
Not once. Not dramatically.
Repeatedly. Quietly. Daily.
While still producing.
That’s when I admitted something I didn’t want to:
I wasn’t the first person to face too much toomuchness.
I thought I could figure out what to do.
That’s arrogance.
Arrogance works, until it doesn’t.
That’s when I realized I could copy the most effective.
So I did.
Turns out Eisenhower figured it out.
Sort by urgency. Sort by importance.
Respond accordingly.
Not a new idea.
Apply it consistently with honesty.
We built The Intentional Grids to stop lying to ourselves.
To sort what’s loud from what matters.
To diagnose the weight of a thing
before responding with default effort.
There’s a Complexity Grid.
There’s a Priority Grid.
Each with a way to answer the question what’s here.
The grids don’t solve too much toomuchness.
They clarify it.

Classy Problems Black Crown

Timing Complexity

I kept saying I didn’t have enough.
Not enough hours. Not enough help. Not enough space.
The problem wasn’t time.
It was the timing of the parts.
Too many moving parts.
Too many decisions.
Too many interactions nested inside of each other.
It wasn’t the size of the thing.
It was the number of parts.
The combinations of parts.
Parts and combinations.
I couldn’t see it.
I was treating it like a task.
When it was a system.
A system I didn’t know I was trying to manage.
I could handle the parts.
I was missing how they interacted.
How pulling one thread
tangled five others.
We built a grid.
To name the system.
Simple. Complicated. Complex. Very complex.
Simple is one part.
Complicated is a few parts.
Complex is how the parts connect.
Very complex is when the connection is hard to predict.
The more parts, the more combinations.
The more combinations, the heavier it gets.
Mentally.
That weight has to be diagnosed
before I say ‘yes’ to something
I will quietly resent.
The Complexity Grid: Diagnose doesn’t fix systems.
It clarifies them.

Classy Problems Black Crown

Responding to Complexity

I kept trying to find the right response.
I wanted a fix. A strategy. An answer.
When what complexity requires
is the right kind of effort.
Not more effort.
Appropriate effort.
Simple didn’t need more meetings.
Complicated didn’t need more control.
Complex didn’t need more urgency.
Very complex didn’t need me
to pretend I had it all figured out.
I thought I needed to be decisive.
What I needed was to respond
based on what was here.
We gave each system a response.
Simple calls for intuition.
Trust what you already know.
No need to overthink it.
Complicated calls for preparation.
Know what’s required.
No need to rush.
Complex calls for thoughtfulness.
Hold space for the connections.
No need to default.
Very complex calls for determination.
Stay in it.
Get familiar with being uncomfortable.
Responding prevents me from wasting my capacity
on something that doesn’t require it.
The Complexity Grid: Respond doesn’t tell me what to do.
It guides my appropriate effort.

Graffiti Classy Problems NEW

Classy Problems is a daily post of thinking in motion by Dan T. Rogers. Each post stands alone as a thought-provoking piece, yet together, they create a puzzle of ideas. They invite you to see things from a different angle, rethink what you thought you knew, and explore what’s beyond your current understanding.

What is a classy problem? A classy problem is when we’ve been afforded the opportunity to figure out what to do. Time to figure it out. Time to practice. Time to discern. When faced with the time to figure out a classy problem, it is more effective to focus on what NOT to do than trying to figure out what to do. In a word: restraint. JOIN US in exploring the distinction between what to do and what not to do in the pursuit of clarity.
