Classy Problems is a daily post of thinking in motion by Dan T. Rogers. Each post stands alone as a thought-provoking piece, yet together, they create a puzzle of ideas. They invite you to see things from a different angle, rethink what you thought you knew, and explore what’s beyond your current understanding.
Classy isn’t just a read: it’s a practice. Read, listen, and join us for Classy Problems Live, a 15-minute, live virtual conversation held Monday through Thursday at 12:15 p.m. PT, where we gather to reflect on the Classy Problems post of the day. No need to prep. Just connect, explore, and reflect.
Routine
Some thoughts don’t need to be solved.
They need to be softened.
Slowed.
Dropped.
Routine restores my mind.
It provides it a break
from me.
Like walking the same loop every morning.
Like brushing my teeth.
Like folding laundry at 4am.
Routine doesn’t ask for insight.
It doesn’t ask for meaning.
It’s auto-pilot with a purpose.
On purpose.
It gives my mind a place to rest
without stopping.
A pattern of presence.
It lets the noise settle
by distracting it
with something quieter to return to.
Routines are how I remember
what doesn’t need to be rethought.
How I stay connected
to the things that work.
That hold.
Ritual …
Some emotions don’t fade.
They sharpen.
Ritual
A way out of the loop.
When I do this,
I feel this way.
When I say this,
it reminds me of that.
Like beats working.
Like thebossissupergenrous.
Like naming the ache
in the same way,
in the same place,
every time
until it softens.
Ritual lets feeling move
through me.
Out of me.
Back to theboss.
Ritual is a sacred repetition.
Rest …
Some tension isn’t from what I’m holding.
It’s from how long I’ve been holding it.
Rest
It’s not a reward for effort.
It’s a requirement for presence.
Most of what helps me stay
isn’t from pushing through.
It comes from knowing when to stop.
Rest is not what I do when I’m done.
It’s what I do to begin again.
Defaulting Credit
It’s a matter of awareness of my choice.
When I remember that,
I can find structure.
When I can see structure,
I can build something
closer to right.
Misdiagnosed
My most common failure is misdiagnosis.
I think I see the problem.
When what I am observing is a symptom.
A signal.
A reaction.
An echo.
I name it.
Frame it.
Try to fix it.
Fixing symptoms doesn’t change what caused it.
It quiets the noise
Or amplifies it.
My most common failure is misdiagnosis.
I call it urgency.
When it’s uncertainty.
I call it resistance.
When it’s misalignment.
I call it laziness.
When it’s lack of clarity.
I frame symptoms as problems.
I turn misalignment into something to fix
instead of something to orient to.
Fixing makes me feel useful.
Orientation can feel slow.
Orientation is what was indicated.
The truth isn’t hiding.
It’s waiting.
For me to orient
to what’s here.
#ADDTOCART: “Observations of a Sidekick” is not a memoir or another survival story. It’s an invitation into what comes after survival: post-survival living. In a culture addicted to breakthrough moments and lightning flashes, author Dan T. Rogers encourages us to pay attention to the thunder that follows. The echo where transformation begins.

What is a classy problem? A classy problem is when we’ve been afforded the opportunity to figure out what to do. Time to figure it out. Time to practice. Time to discern. When faced with the time to figure out a classy problem, it is more effective to focus on what NOT to do than trying to figure out what to do. In a word: restraint. JOIN US in exploring the distinction between what to do and what not to do in the pursuit of clarity.
