Classy Problems is a daily post of thinking in motion by Dan T. Rogers. Each post stands alone as a thought-provoking piece, yet together, they create a puzzle of ideas. They invite you to see things from a different angle, rethink what you thought you knew, and explore what’s beyond your current understanding.

Classy isn’t just a read: it’s a practice. Read, listen, and join us for Classy Problems Live, a 15-minute, live virtual conversation held Monday through Thursday at 12:15p PT, where we gather to reflect on the Classy Problems post of the day. No need to prep. Just connect, explore, and reflect.

    Life Precedes Death

    I tell myself
    I’m being responsible.
    Planning ahead.
    Avoiding risk.
    Managing downside.
    I call it foresight.
    It’s fear.
    I wasn’t aware
    I was designing
    for survival
    instead of living.
    I was orienting to
    what could go wrong
    instead of
    what could go right.
    Protecting my downside
    at the expense of upside.
    Like optimizing a calendar
    to avoid burnout
    instead of
    aligning it for contribution.
    The loop of effort spent
    avoiding what I don’t want
    instead of moving toward
    what I do.
    Am I avoiding something
    in the name of survival
    when I could make space
    for something worth living.
    Death is inevitable.
    Life precedes it.
    My intention is more than
    to not die.
    It’s to live on purpose,
    on purpose,
    until I do.

    Classy Problems Black Crown

    Outsource Survival

    I thought we’d made
    progress.
    Secured safety.
    Scaled comfort.
    I called it evolution.
    It was disconnection.
    I didn’t realize
    that outsourcing survival
    meant detaching from
    the system
    that made it matter.
    I stopped building tribes.
    Started building estates.
    An estate is a system.
    A system without a soul.
    It is infrastructure.
    Infrastructure without spirit.
    I chased what was scalable.
    Overlooking what was sacred.
    Progress gave me
    more resources than I had
    imagination to use.
    Like having technology
    capable of space-travel
    and using it to scroll,
or to take pictures of my food.
    The loop of resources
    without reverence.
    Scale without soul.
    Am I designing to protect
    or connect?

    Classy Problems Black Crown

    Survival Strategy vs. Living System

I thought I was being smart.
    Planning.
    Protecting.
    Preparing.
    I called it strategy.
    It was survival.
    I didn’t realize
    I was designing a life
    around minimizing risk,
    instead of maximizing meaning.
    I optimized for safety
    instead of significance.
    I kept designing rules.
    Trying to predict and prevent.
    When what I needed
    was rhythm.
    I wanted predictability,
    not rigidity.
    Like overengineering
a decision for how to spend
    my weekend instead of
    leaving room for theboss.
    The loop of protection
    at the cost of participation.
    Survival thinking
    in the form of planning.
    What helps me
    interrupt that loop:
    Am I building a strategy
    to stay safe?
    Or a system
    to stay on purpose,
    on purpose?
    Survival protects me
    from what could go wrong.
    Living invites me into
    closer to right.

    Classy Problems Black Crown

    Tribe Builders vs. Estate Builders

    I was building something big.
    Structured.
    Secure.
    Impressive.
    I called it leadership.
    It was administration.
    I didn’t realize
    I was designing distance.
    Not connection.
    Crafting systems.
    Without soul.
    I became an estate builder.
    Trading belonging
    for scalability.
    Culture for control.
    Soul for structure.
    Estates run on policies.
    Tribes run on contribution.
    The estate protects.
    The tribe connects.
    Like setting up
    new roles and rules
    when what’s missing
    is shared purpose.
    The loop of governance
    without guidance.
    Coordination without community.
    How I coordinate
    my own guidance is asking
Is my goal to increase compliance
    or alliance?

    Classy Problems Black Crown

    Cycles vs. Lines

    Linear thinking and frameworks
    are incomplete.
    They try to map
    what theboss designed
    as recursive.
    theboss doesn’t draw
    in straight lines.
    theboss draws
    in curves and patterns.
    Models are precious thinking
    dressed up in polish.
    Big titles for small thoughts.
    Useful for introducing
    a concept.
    Not complete enough
    to contain it.
    Frameworks are scaffolding.
    Made to scale the outside
    of a thing.
    They don’t get inside
    of a thing.
    Cycles are different.
    Cycles are a complete thought.
    Not necessarily accurate.
    Often flawed.
    They attempt to hold
    the whole thing at once.
    A model points.
    A cycle moves.
    Frameworks segment.
    Cycles integrate.
    We don’t need to
    memorize the map.
    We need to
    be in the motion.
    We are in motion.
Its not a matter of choice.
    It’s a matter of awareness.
    Cycles echo patterns.
    Patterns reflect belief.
    Belief becomes design.
    We can’t solve a cycle
    with a model.
    We have to enter it.
We have to live in it.
    A cycle might be incomplete.
    Tragically flawed.
    They are still more complete
    than something pretending
    to be perfect.
Better to hold a flawed whole
    than a precious part.

    Classy Problems Black Crown

    Awesome is Included

    I’m being discerning.
    Clear-eyed vision.
    Constructively critical of the details.
Calling it like I see it.
    I call it focus.
    It’s fixation.
I couldn’t see when my attention had been hijacked
    by what was missing.
I couldn’t see where I was focusing on
    what wasn’t working.
    What still needs fixing.
I told myself it was about excellence.
    It’s about progress.
    About being closer to right.
I was fixating on the flaw.
Instead of focusing on the gift.
    I was amplifying what’s missing.
Instead of noticing what’s already here.
Like noticing the typos in a post and
missing the fact that it moved someone.
The loop of attention aimed at absence.
Effort spent on the flaw instead of the form.
What helps me break that loop:
    What is here?
    What is closer to right?
    What is awesome?
Focusing on awesome doesn’t mean ignoring the broken.
It means honoring what’s already built.
What we focus on becomes what we build.
    Awesome is included.

    Classy Problems Black Crown

    Reference

    I’m responding.
    Making decisions.
    Reading the moment.
    Reacting to what’s happening.
At least, I think I am.
    I call it awareness.
    It’s automation.
    Default mode.
    I didn’t realize
    I wasn’t responding to reality.
I was responding to a frame.
    A frame I didn’t build.
    One I inherited.
    Built around survival.
    Or performance.
    Or perfection.
    Or fear.
    I didn’t choose it.
    I didn’t name it.
I accepted it without questioning it.
    Without acknowledging it.
Seemingly knowledgeable about where I am.
    The loop of unquestioned assumptions
    guiding unquestioned actions.
    The more invisible the frame,
    the more control it has.
    The more it dominates me.
    It distorts what I see.
    It shapes how I act.
    That’s a fact.
That I have to uncover for myself.
    Like entering a conversation
    already bracing for failure,
    calling it feedback,
    reference.
    Did I build this frame?
    Or did I inherit it?
    Can I reframe it
    with intention?
    I can’t always change what’s happening.
I can always choose the reference,
    the frame, I respond from.
I don’t have to keep reacting to a story I defaulted to.
I can build a new frame.
    One that sees clearly.
    One built on answering,
    What is here?

What is a classy problem? A classy problem is when we’ve been afforded the opportunity to figure out what to do. Time to figure it out. Time to practice. Time to discern. When faced with the time to figure out a classy problem, it is more effective to focus on what NOT to do than trying to figure out what to do. In a word: restraint. JOIN US in exploring the distinction between what to do and what not to do in the pursuit of clarity.
