Welcome to the Classy Problems weekly mash-up for Monday, December 30, 2024 – Sunday, January 5, 2025
Classy Problems is a daily post of thinking in motion by Dan T. Rogers. Each post stands alone as a thought-provoking piece, yet together, they create a puzzle of ideas. They invite you to see things from a different angle, rethink what you thought you knew, and explore what’s beyond your current understanding.

December 30 – It’s All on Loan
Everything we possess, our so called stuff, is temporary. We forget that we can’t take it with us. If we can’t take it with us, it was never ours to begin with. Think of everything we own as a loan, a gift from the universe, or what I call, ‘theboss’’.
The essence of what we hold—whether it be knowledge, wisdom, physical health, or material wealth—is not meant to be hoarded but rather shared. These gifts come with the inherent responsibility to be passed on.
The idea of sharing our stuff challenges the two survival stories that deceive us into thinking these things are ours to keep—that we own them. It’s like the hoarder’s disregard of the truth, clutching onto ‘mine’ like a spoiled child.
Here’s the curious truth that even resonates with the hoarder in us: when we muster the courage to share, every gift we possess multiplies in value. Feeling happy? Pass that joy onto someone else. Watch what happens next—their happiness increases and so does yours. It’s a two-for-one deal, a perfect example of ‘thebossissupergenerous’.
What are the precious things you believe you own that you could courageously share today?

December 31 – Picking and Serving
Time is a mental construct. More bluntly, it’s make-believe.
We shape time by imposing constraints with frames we call starts and stops.
But time dictates value. Another word for value is meaning. Time gives shape to value and meaning by either concentrating or diluting them.
So, at what level of awareness and intention are we framing time? Are we picking a timeframe, or are we serving one?
Either way, the choice is ours. It’s far more effective to intentionally choose a timeframe that serves our meaning. If we don’t, time—and the meaning attached to it—gets dictated to us.
Imagine any event or decision in your life. And dramatically shrink or expand the timeframe. Now, what happened to the value and meaning?
Like the change, don’t like the change –either way, which one will you choose?

January 1 – Good Enuf
‘Good enuf’ is an approach to resolving a problem, challenge, or opportunity. Good enuf is effective when the use of our previous experience or common sense where we’re looking for good enough, not perfect.
Where are you focusing on perfect when good enough is good enuf?

January 2 – Lost in Translation
For the last 20 years, we’ve added somewhere between one to two thousand words and terms a year to the English language—20,000 to 40,000 in total. While we probably don’t need more acronyms, it’s good to have terms like chef’s kiss, prosocial, and rewild.
The vitality of language isn’t just in how it grows; it’s in how it develops to reflect the society it speaks for.
None of us can keep up with every new word and definition. And in that gap, something important gets lost. These terms often simplify complex issues. Worse, they help us feel better without necessarily helping us BE better.
Take quiet quitting or the unhoused. Easy to say, harder to understand, impossible to stomach. And that’s where these terms fail us. When we don’t fully comprehend, we minimize. When we minimize, we reduce the emotional weight, making it easier to digest—and in doing so, we often become indifferent.
We can’t care about everything. But did we intentionally choose to stop caring, or did we just learn a new term and move on?
Where is your language conveniently creating indifference when we need you to make a difference?

January 3 – It’s in The Actions, Not The Results
I’ve found that what most people compliment me for is what has been provided by theboss. They compliment me on my intelligence or being successful in my career. Both of which are winning lottery tickets.
Where I’ve made my contribution is in attempting to make the most out of my intelligence and having the courage to take actions in my career. The results of both are above my pay grade.
It’s in the actions, not the results.
What actions are you taking, regardless of the results?

January 4 – Do The Footwork And theboss Always Provides
When anything attempts to fit itself to the universe — or what we call theboss — you can count on two things.
- The effort will be imperfect.
- It will always be met with more than what’s required.
That effort — footwork, or work for short — is the most honorable act in the universe.
The only thing in question is our opinion on if it’s working or not.
When something isn’t working, are you focusing on what you require or fitting yourself to something larger than yourself?

January 5 – Appropriate Pacing
We often feel overwhelmed by the volume of information and demands for our attention. In a word — toomuchness. While we may not be able to control how quickly this happens, we do hold significant agency over how we can respond.
A key to managing this is appropriate pacing, specifically, cadence and dosage.
Cadence is the frequency of our interactions. HOW OFTEN determines what is required to maintain balance without becoming overwhelmed.
Dosage is the amount we take on in each interaction. HOW MUCH determines what is required to maintain balance without becoming overwhelmed.
By reflecting on ‘How often?’ and ‘How much?’ we can better align our interactions with our environment. These decisions, made intentionally, can decrease overwhelm and increase effectiveness.
How can adjusting your cadence and dosage with toomuchness reduce its impact?
PS …
How often and how much do you want in each interaction with Classy Problems? Daily and direct to you is intentional, but if you prefer to decrease the frequency, follow us here — this is our version of a weekly mashup.

What is a classy problem?
A classy problem is when we’ve been afforded the opportunity to figure out what to do. When faced with classy problems, it is more effective to focus on what NOT to do than trying to figure out what to do. In a word – restraint. Join us in exploring the distinction between what to do and what not to do in the pursuit of clarity.
