Classy Problems is a daily post of thinking in motion by Dan T. Rogers. Each post stands alone as a thought-provoking piece, yet together, they create a puzzle of ideas. They invite you to see things from a different angle, rethink what you thought you knew, and explore what’s beyond your current understanding.

    How Precious

We define precious as the uniqueness of convenience.

The uniqueness over-inflates the importance of a perceived difference. Convenience minimizes the greater quantity of sameness.

Preciousness magnifies detail and distinction without acknowledging a larger context or environment that surrounds it.

It distracts in its attention to what is not the same over what is.

Focusing on sameness places uniqueness in context and reconnects it to the broader patterns that matter and design constraints that must ultimately be aligned to.

What convenient distractions are you over-inflating?

    The Compass of Confusion

Confusion is not a block. It’s not something to be feared or avoided.

It’s an inevitable part of the development process. The idea that we can sustain clarity 100% of the time is an example of precious thinking.

In reality, it means that we are confronting previously unseen or unpredicted events that are now present.

Confusion is an invitation to reorient and align.

When we find ourselves unclear, we’re on the edge of clarity. Confusion is a compass.

How could you reframe confusion as a navigational device, not a conclusion?

    Nearness in Closeness

Proximity is nearness in place, time, order, occurrence, or relation. It’s closeness.

Closeness isn’t always comfortable, but it’s where work happens. Where we don’t get closer to the task but closer to ourselves and each other.

Proximity in closeness can set off survival thinking. That’s proof we’re stepping into something real.

The challenge isn’t avoiding that feeling. It’s thanking it for showing up and then choosing to engage anyway. When we do, the work stops feeling like work, and the effort transforms into something deeper.

Where in your relationships is discomfort signaling an invitation to go deep?

    Clarity Paradox

Clarity comes at the cost of removing the non-essential.

What do you need to let go of to see?

    A Space for Clarity

When proximity is intentional, place becomes a space for clarity. What we call splaces.

Splaces are environments where we pull in the constraints of space. They focus and align meaningful interaction, making us near, no matter the place.

What constraints have you pulled in to be near?

    A Method for Development

When proximity is intentional, time becomes a method for development. What we call getting paid to practice.

Traditional work exchanges time for money. Paid practice exchanges time for development. Instead of a transaction, work becomes transformation.

    Beats working.

Where are you exchanging time for money when development is actually available?

    PS …

Want stories of how getting paid to practice life beats working to get paid? Check out our podcast, BEATS WORKING.

    A Framework for Alignment

When proximity is intentional, order becomes a framework for alignment. What we call intentional impact.

Contribution is inevitable. As things become more complex, and if we want to continue developing, we must put things in order.

Impact is not a matter of choice, it’s a matter of awareness.

    Are you aware of yours?

    PS …

Our Intentional Impact Exercise begins the process of that awareness. Our weekly live sessions develop it.

What is a classy problem? A classy problem is when we’ve been afforded the opportunity to figure out what to do. Time to figure it out. Time to practice. Time to discern. When faced with the time to figure out a classy problem, it is more effective to focus on what NOT to do than trying to figure out what to do. In a word: restraint. JOIN US in exploring the distinction between what to do and what not to do in the pursuit of clarity.
