Welcome to the Classy Problems weekly mash-up for Monday, December 2 – Sunday, December 8, 2024.
Classy Problems is a daily post of thinking in motion by Dan T. Rogers. Each post stands alone as a thought-provoking piece, yet together, they create a puzzle of ideas. They invite you to see things from a different angle, rethink what you thought you knew, and explore what’s beyond your current understanding.

December 2 – The Initial Threshold
Cultural icons have long heralded space as the final frontier. It made for great entertainment, but it might be more useful to think of space as the initial threshold.
Reframing space not as a boundary or goal but as the starting point from which all navigation begins. By framing space as the initial threshold, we open ourselves to a universe of learning, development, and connection.
Consider the word ‘apart’ — take it apart: we get ‘a part’. By shifting how we frame space, its meaning transforms from something that separates us to something that includes us.
Whether intellectual, emotional, or physical space, each represents a beginning, a threshold to deeper understanding.
How might being more intentional with your framing of space impact your perceptions and interactions?

December 3 – Reference as Guideposts
To reference is to mentally recognize a point, emotionally anchor oneself for stability, and physically use as an aid in orientation.
Without reference, we drift in the sea of uncertainty.
With it, we orient ourselves, navigate complexity, and move with purpose.
Reference points are essential tools for clarity and direction.
What are you referring to as your reference?

December 4 – Capture
To capture is to bring an idea into reality. It’s the mental process of grasping or understanding an idea, emotionally connecting with its significance, and physically retaining it for future use or reference.
Capturing is making the intangible tangible, not just as conceptualizing — it’s about actualizing an idea into something real and aligning its immediate reference with its future utility in the proper sequence.
What are you holding onto that you haven’t captured?

December 5 – Vision is Looking Forward
Vision is the power to see beyond what is and imagine what could be. It begins as a mental picture of future possibilities, grows through emotional anticipation, and shapes our actions. A compelling vision doesn’t just show us the way — it inspires the courage to move forward, even when the path is full of uncertainty.
It’s the proper integration of yesterday and the bridge between today’s reality and tomorrow’s potential. When aligned with intention, vision transforms ambiguity into clarity, creating momentum toward meaningful contributions. It’s the lens that ensures we are moving closer to what truly matters.
Are you focusing on what’s ahead, or is your view clouded by what lies behind?

December 6 – An Act of Alignment
To orient is to align — to establish where we are and where we’re headed mentally, emotionally, and physically. It connects us to a sense of direction, purpose, and intention. Orienting is adjusting ourselves one action at a time.
When we orient, we create alignment with our thoughts, feelings, and actions, helping us to navigate life’s too much toomuchness with integrity. It is the aspect of focus that initiates meaningful, right-sized progress.
How are you aligning your focus today?

December 7 – Some Thoughts on Thinking and Planning
As life becomes more complex, it becomes increasingly important to be precise with our words.
It’s easy to confuse thinking with planning when looking from the outside. But the difference lies in what’s desired and what’s not.
Thinking and planning are both cognitive acts, meaning they are mental processes, but that’s where the similarities end.
Thinking is inclusive. You can do it alone, with other people, with a keyboard, with a whiteboard, with your eyes open, with your eyes closed, with a pen, or with a pencil. The key to effective thinking is to have a loose grip on the outcome and a high degree of curiosity. The value of thinking is in the exploration of what could be.

The key to effective planning is to have a firm grasp on the desired outcome and why you want it. The value of planning is in the exploration of how to get the desired outcome.
Is your outcome to be thinking, or are you planning an outcome?

December 8 – Zoom Settings
Long before the era of shelter-in-place, and likely long after the next tectonic shift in technology, the true power of ‘zoom’ will endure.
As transformative as tech can be, the real value lies in our ability to adjust the elevation of our perspective. The level at which we choose to zoom in or out profoundly influences how we perceive and interpret reality.
If the meaning doesn’t feel right, remember, that a shift in your ‘zoom’ settings can reveal a different meaning. The ability to alter perspective is not just a tool but a skill that enhances how we engage with everything from daily tasks to complex challenges.
Are you operating on default settings, or are you intentionally setting your own zoom to shape your perspective?

What is a classy problem?
A classy problem is when we’ve been afforded the opportunity to figure out what to do. When faced with classy problems, it is more effective to focus on what NOT to do than trying to figure out what to do. In a word – restraint. Join us in exploring the distinction between what to do and what not to do in the pursuit of clarity.
