I’m always looking for an aperitif or cordial to enjoy the ritual of sipping. Sipping before dinner or sipping with dessert. I have to admit, I miss a good tawny port. The aroma, the flavor. Just a little sumpin’. Honestly, amaretto and coffee liqueurs have never been my thing, but I tried these two flavors from Beckett’s with an open mind.

Their Amaretto definitely conjured up those high school days when I snuck out to go to the local dance bar and ordered an amaretto sour. Yes to notes of toasty almond, but it’s not something I like to sip on its own. So I got creative and mixed a cocktail from Beckett’s website to see if Amaretto could have a place at my home bar. I shook the simple Money Penny cocktail, which included Earl Grey tea, lemon juice and Amaretto. While it was a beautiful-looking cocktail with the aroma and subtle taste of amaretto, the mouthfeel fell a bit short and I craved a bit of sweetness. While I didn’t test it, I think the addition of ½ ounce of simple syrup would balance this cocktail out nicely.

As for the Coffee Liqueur, this was a very nice after-dinner drink, enjoyed straight up in a vintage cordial glass. I could imagine this would also be quite tasty poured over ice cream or an add-on to a serving of bread pudding — yum!
