“The Rising” by Amy Liz Harrison | Sober Poetry

This is a poem from a newcomer in recovery asking a sober mentor, spiritual advisor, friend, or sponsor what it’s like to be in long-term recovery… enjoy.

Share with me once again

as the shadows stretch long

and the hum of a weary world

dims my spirit—

that this path leads somewhere.

Whisper it once more

as the sun dips behind the hills,

its amber light

spilling over my fears—

that I’ll find peace here.

Hold me with your words

as the storms of my past rage on,

howling through my hollow chest—

share with me how you’ve weathered them.

And as the night’s stillness

wraps us in its quiet embrace,

and the ache for what was

tugs at my restless mind—

repeat to me the truth you’ve found.

Say it, even if my heart hesitates,

even if my ears are clouded with doubt.

Say it until the dawn rises,

until hope begins to hum softly

in the chambers of my soul.

Share with me what it’s like

to wake up without regret,

to breathe in life’s ups and downs

without numbing the ache.

Share with me how you hold joy

and sorrow in the same hand.

Say it again,

that this journey—

this stumbling, this rising—

can one day

feel like home.
