Review of “Days of Wine and Roses” on Broadway for The Sober Curator

Upon witnessing the powerful portrayal of love, struggle, and addiction in “Days of Wine and Roses” at Studio 54 on a poignant evening in New York City, a wave of emotions swept over me. Starring the remarkable duo of Kelli O’Hara and Brian d’Arcy James, this musical adaptation of the classic tale from the 1950s captured the essence of battling personal demons amidst the backdrop of a blossoming romance.

The echoes of The Washington Post’s acclaim for the production as “rich and undeniably gorgeous” resonated through each scene, while The New York Times’ declaration of O’Hara and James as superb performers stood as a testament to their talent. Under the masterful direction of Michael Greif, the narrative unfolded with a raw authenticity that tugged at the heartstrings, delving into the complexities of addiction and love.

Composer and lyricist Adam Guettel, along with playwright Craig Lucas, skillfully brought JP Miller’s poignant story to life on the Broadway stage, infusing it with a depth that reverberated with the audience. This collaboration marked a poignant return for the creative minds behind “The Light in the Piazza,” delivering a performance that lingered long after the final curtain fell.

As a person in recovery from alcohol use disorder, the themes explored in “Days of Wine and Roses” struck a chord deep within. Especially the part of parenting under the influence. The haunting melodies, the tumultuous journey of the protagonists, and the stark realities of addiction painted a vivid tapestry of struggles and resilience. In a world where the allure of escapism battles against the call of sobriety, this production served as a poignant reminder of the fragile line between self-destruction and redemption.

In the shadows of Studio 54, amidst the echoes of applause and silent contemplation, “Days of Wine and Roses” illuminated the darkness of addiction, offering a poignant reflection on the complexities of the human experience. It is a production that lingers in the mind, sparking introspection and empathy long after the final notes fade into the night.

My plus one for the evening was the fabulous fellow Sober Curator Contributor Kate Vitela. We were one day post Break Free New York Fashion Week show, which probably explains why I nodded off in the middle of the production. (#thatsawkward) I love Broadway and I always aim to take in a show anytime I have a stay in the Big Apple. Getting to see a show inside of the historic Studio 54 was quite a treat.
