The Sober Curator

You’ve Been Selected with Kate Vitela

When I was approached in 2021 to write a column about fashion and the role it plays in our recovery, I thought it would be a fun, silly way to add glam to a not-so-glamorous topic. I signed off on blog posts with “Grace and Glam” as my signature line and felt that was all I had to say to the recovery metaverse. It was the height of the pandemic during that time, and the self-help arena exploded. I was happy to stick with fashion and style and not contribute to the self-help zeitgeist.

Harnessing my energy, I dove into the world of fashion full force as any good addict does, and I realized I had much more to say to the world. I hit the runway myself as a model, and taking the stage cracked something open in me; I didn’t know I was there. I wanted more than twenty seconds of fame strutting out in high heels. At five years sober, I wanted to take the microphone and significantly impact the audience by sharing my truths.

Modeling reminded me of all the things I was insecure about growing up; body image, weight, appearance, height…everything. Yet I am so glad I pushed past all that and got brave enough to show up for myself. I still use #modelingformentalhealth.  Today I feel those topics bubbling up inside of me, and instead of feeling triggered, I feel empowered. Because that is what recovery does for you. So, in true Walk Your Talk fashion, I am speaking up. You’ve Been Selected” is a column I have always wanted to write. Titled after years of mandatory drug testing, I saw those words appear across my screen repeatedly. And I felt like it was the universe nudging me along.

So please join me on this journey as we discuss drunkorexia, eating disorders, binge drinking, body image, perfectionism, and all the damn things that make womaning so hard.

Peace within. Bullshit out.

You’ve Been Selected is coming your way soon.
