WTF is Barbiecore & How Is It Relevant to Sobriety?

WTF is Barbiecore, and how is it relevant to sobriety? Simply put, it’s Dopamine Dressing. Now let’s unpack this a bit…

While I’m not an expert in giving style advice, I am a certified dopamine diva so that I can speak with a well-earned level of real-life experience. Dopamine Dressing is a term that came into the fashionista’s lexicon a few years ago to give a fancy title to wearing what feels good!! #wearwhatmakesyouhappy. Personally, during my recovery, this has been a phenomenon that has helped me get through some tough days. I am no Barbie, but I know how to pile on a few things that boost my mood and show off my figure.

Get your pink on.

Barbie core is defined as a hyperfeminine, pretty in pink aesthetic that usually involves mixing a variety of bold and vibrant shades of pink in one outfit.  So, let’s be honest; it’s trendy, overly cliché, and bordering on camp. However, please don’t knock it before you try it. Many of us have fifty shades of pink lying around the house, whether in a 90s-style purse or an 80s-style windbreaker. Try putting it all on at once. Get your pink on.

Pantone’s “color of the year” is Viva Magenta Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year Is Viva Magenta – The New York Times (nytimes.com), and while this differs from true Barbie pink, it’s in the same rose-colored wheelhouse. Last year design houses like Valentino, McQueen & Dior put pink on blast on the runway. Valentino especially went crazy with the pink monochromatic aesthetic. So, I have to admit, I was curious about my personal rendition of this, and I started organizing things in my closet by color. It turns out I have a lot of pink!  While monochromatic looks can be done in any shade, pink feels good. And there is something about pink that conveys a perfect mix of intentional yet playful style.

So, start rounding up your pink and show me your stuff! Don’t take yourself too seriously. The only Barbie I identify with today is Rehab Barbie. And I’m perfectly cool with that.

Grace & Glam,

Kate
