Owning a Successful Bar While Maintaining Sobriety – Cesar Vallin’s Story at Cloak & Petal

Cloak & Petal Cesar Vallin Sober in San Diego

Dry January is just around the corner—a movement inspiring thousands to press pause on alcohol for an entire month. For many, it’s just a break. But for others, it’s an introduction to a transformational lifestyle. For San Diego’s Cesar Vallin, Dry January wasn’t just a temporary experiment—it was the start of a sober path that would change his life forever. Not only has Cesar found peace in sobriety, but he’s also created a thriving bar, Cloak & Petal, that caters just as much to those who choose not to drink as to those who do.

Cloak & Petal, located in San Diego’s vibrant Little Italy neighborhood, doesn’t just serve drinks—it provides an unforgettable experience. You’ll be greeted by enormous faux cherry blossoms hanging overhead, neon lights illuminating intricate murals, and an ambiance that resembles a collision of modern Tokyo’s electric energy and Shibuya’s cool, cultural depth. And the drink menu? It mirrors that same level of artistry, offering bold, creative mocktails that are proof non-alcoholic doesn’t mean non-exciting.

But what makes Cloak & Petal truly stand out is its co-founder, Cesar Vallin. His personal story forged the heart of the bar—and it’s a story of resilience, transformation, and inclusivity.

Cesar Vallin’s Journey to Sobriety and Success

The path to Cloak & Petal begins with Cesar’s deeply personal struggles with alcoholism and mental health. Like many, his relationship with alcohol started as a way to cope with the stresses of life and eventually grew into a destructive force. He hit rock bottom, struggling with suicidal thoughts until a profound experience in Japan changed everything.

During a trip to Tokyo, Cesar found inspiration in Japanese culture—its respect for balance, innovation, and beauty in simplicity ignited a new perspective. Fueled by this life-altering experience, Cesar made two pivotal decisions. First, he embraced sobriety and the clarity it brought to his life. Second, he turned his focus toward creating a space that married this newfound inspiration with his professional ambitions.

By the time Cloak & Petal opened its doors, Cesar had committed to a lifestyle of sobriety. That commitment has not only shaped the vision of the bar but has also redefined what it means to provide an inclusive experience. Cesar’s story has earned him recognition in publications like Bold Journey Magazine and SDVoyager, and for good reason—it’s a testament to his unwavering dedication to personal growth and the community he serves.

Redefining the Bar Experience

At Cloak & Petal, the mocktails are as vibrant and refined as the alcohol-forward creations, if not more so. Each drink is crafted with precision and creativity, designed to indulge even the most discerning of palates. Here are just a few standout options:

A tropical dream in a glass. Grilled pineapple sour mingles with fresh lemon, pineapple juice, and Fee Foam for a refreshing yet tangy delight. This drink transports you straight to Tokyo on a warm summer evening.

Crisp, invigorating, and packed with flavor. Mint, lime, apple celery syrup, and cranberry juice come together in a beautifully layered mix. It’s a drink that offers both a refreshing bite and smooth undertones.

This botanical masterpiece is a perfect balance of delicate and sophisticated. Seedlip, lime, simple syrup, and cranberry juice unite for a drink that feels just as indulgent as any traditional cocktail.

These mocktails don’t just quench your thirst—they elevate the entire non-alcoholic experience. They show that a night out doesn’t need to fit into the confines of traditional drinking culture. At Cloak & Petal, everyone has something to celebrate.

Creating a Space for Everyone

Cesar’s dedication to his sober lifestyle has brought inclusiveness and innovation to the forefront of the Cloak & Petal experience. For him, it’s about more than just offering non-alcoholic options—it’s about crafting an environment where everyone feels welcome and considered. Whether you’re a bar regular or someone navigating a new, sober lifestyle, there’s a place for you here.

And the mocktails? They’re not a second thought—they’re an art form. Cloak & Petal is setting a new standard, proving that non-alcoholic options can be bold, flavorful, and just as complex as their spirited counterparts.

Inspiration for Aspiring Bar Owners and the Recovery Community

Cesar’s story gives hope to aspiring bar owners and members of the recovery community. It’s proof that success can coexist with sobriety—and that staying true to your values can lead to powerful, transformational outcomes.

Sober Stop: Legoland

If you are a Lego nerd like I am, you will want to plan at least one visit to the infamous Legoland. Sober Curator Fun Fact: Once upon a time, a long, long while ago (think pre-2020), I was a guest in the audience for the Ellen show. (Filmed in Burbank, CA) At the time, I was working for KING 5, the NBC TV station affiliate in Seattle, which is how I scored the hard-to-get tickets. As luck would have it, the day I was there, everyone in the audience won a chance to return and be in the audience AGAIN for Ellen’s famous 12 Days of Christmas.

Upon returning for my second time at the Ellen Show, my winnings included many cool gifts – including four tickets to Legoland. As the mother of a grown child, I don’t know that I would have purchased tickets to go, but I was still happy to have had the opportunity to check it out. Arguably, the rides are much more targeted at kiddos than adults, compared to other theme parks. That said, checking out all of the fantastic lego exhibits was totally worth it.

No trip to visit sunny San Diego is complete without a visit to the beach, the marina, In-N-Out, and the iconic Bloomingdales. Whether you’re a local or tourist, the greater San Diego offers bountiful ways to keep yourself entertained, relaxed, hydrated, and well-fed – all while doing it sober.
