The Mindful Binge: Bad Behavior. Great Publicists. Amazon Prime Hit Series “Flack” Has All Of The Terrible Decisions & Underlying Addictions That Make This A Binge-Watch Must, Starring Anna Paquin

Folding or Director wooden chair in the garden

Movie Night with The Sober Curator, Amazon Prime Video brings us Season one of Flack, a British dramedy series showcasing terrible decisions, underlying addictions, and the world of celebrity PR stunts. And we are here for it! Starring Academy Award Winner Anna Paquin, hang onto your Wellies sober peeps, because this show takes off fast and throws lots of punchy one-liners.

Flack is basically Scandal but on recreational drugs. Trigger warning! For all of you recovered coke-heads, there are lots of lines in this series and we aren’t talking about the script. Paquin’s character Robin is the mastermind of damage control for her celebrity clients. Robin is pretty damaged herself. We watch her battle past demons and spin out on her on-the-wagon off-the-wagon cycles of destruction while somehow still functioning.

In researching other reviews, there seems to be a good amount of opinions that say this show isn’t very good. Maybe they don’t love fashion, British scandal, binge drinking and drug use as much as I do? Because I binged right through Season one in no time. And I’m chomping at the bit for Season Two.

Each of the main characters spoke to me in different ways

Starting with Robin, played by Paquin, I love how she somehow keeps things together in the workplace while her personal life spins out of control. (Very relatable) She’s constantly in personal stand-offs with her live-in BF Sam and sister Ruth who she fondly refers to as Roo. Robin attends NA meetings, but sober she is not. This is where Tom, a sober former ballet dancer with a previous nasty cocaine habit, enters the scene. He remains a steady character throughout Season One. His storyline? Well, you’ll just have to see for yourself. I’m not here to be your buzzkill.

Then there’s Eve, played by Lydia Wilson, Robin’s best friend and partner in crime. She is a regular modern day Cruella Deville minus the puppies. You will love to hate her until you decide you love her. She’s snarky and has some incredible one-liners. The outfits, the bags, and the shoes, oh my! Eve comes in first place for the fashion seen in Season One. Eve is a complicated character who rarely lets her icy walls down.

Next we have Melody, played by Rebecca Benson, the sweet, wholesome country bumpkin with the cute bob haircut that moves to the big city and lands a job with the PR sharks Robin and Eve. Having no idea what she’s gotten herself into, it’s easy to cheer for this under dog.

Caroline, the boss of all bosses, played by Sophia Okonedo, owns the role of the narcissistic Head of the Mill Paulson PR firm. She is both horrible and genius and appears to be incapable of having any real human emotions.

“The world keeps turning, we just help push.”

– Caroline, Head of Mills Paulson, played by actress Sophie Okonedo

In conclusion

Working in PR has never looked as exciting or dangerous as it does in Flack. This show gives you an idea of what happens behind the curtains of the industry of the rich and famous. It’s comical, dramatic, and a first class train wreck you won’t want to miss. How much of it is Hollywood-ized? That’s up for you to decide, but the drinking and drug use seem pretty spot on to me. As for the ending of Season One, it’s a doozey. I think I screamed “OH SHIT” loud enough to wake my sleeping Boston Terriers, Roxie & Bella.

Flack – Behind the Scenes with the Fashion

I loved the fashion and styling of the characters in this series. As I write this post, I’m still obsessing about Eve’s blunt bleached blonde bangs and side fringe. And I literally just grew my bangs out in the last year. All of the ladies at the Mills Paulson firm serve up some very stylish workwear. Perhaps I’m infatuated with it because I’ve been working from home with business on the top and yoga pants and slippers on the bottom for the last year. Will I ever where my high heels again?
