Best Cities to Live a Sober Lifestyle

Some cities are known for their bustling nightlife, while others are more laid back and relaxed. But for those in recovery from addiction, some cities offer better resources and support systems than others.

In my humble opinion, here are some of the best cities to be sober in the United States:

Seattle, Washington:

Of course, I’m putting my city in the number one spot. In the words of Macklemore “My city’s filthy!” Known for its stunning natural beauty and thriving tech industry, Seattle also boasts a large recovery community and a variety of resources for those in recovery. The city has several sober living facilities and 12-step meetings, as well as a strong network of sober social activities. From hiking in the nearby mountains to enjoying the famous coffee shops and seafood restaurants, Seattle offers many opportunities to enjoy a sober life. Sober Curator Pro Tip: Because so many of our Sober Curators live in the Emerald City, we’ve dedicated an entire section of our site to Seattle.

Portland, Oregon:

Similar to Seattle, Portland is known for its progressive culture, vibrant art scene, and access to nature. The city has a variety of sober living options and numerous 12-step meetings, as well as a number of sober social groups and activities. From hiking and biking in Forest Park to exploring the many local boutiques and coffee shops, Portland offers a great quality of life for those in recovery. My favorite must-stop spots are Powell’s Bookstore and Wildfang. (Side note, I’m declaring 2023 Year of the Coveralls!) Looking for a sober community? Be sure to check out @mysobergirlfriends

Austin, Texas:

Austin is known for its lively music scene and vibrant cultural scene, and the city has a growing recovery community as well. It has multiple sober living homes, recovery centers and 12-step meetings. The city also has a number of outdoor activities, from hiking and biking in the nearby hills to swimming in Barton Springs Pool, providing opportunities for sober fun. Sober Curator Pro Tip: Austin is home to Sans Bar, the very first alcohol-free bar in the country. Our very own Sober Curator DJ Missing Mei is moving to Austin. She’s the Founder of The Creative Sober online community for artists.

Denver, Colorado:

Denver is known for its stunning natural beauty and its active, outdoorsy population. The city has a number of sober living facilities, recovery centers, and 12-step meetings. From skiing and hiking in the nearby Rocky Mountains to exploring the city’s many parks and bike paths, Denver offers a great quality of life for those in recovery. Plus, Denver has an incredible street art scene that is perfect for any sober Instagrammer. Looking for sober events? New York City, New York:

One of the most famous cities in the world, New York City also has a large recovery community and a variety of resources for those in recovery. The city has a number of sober living facilities, recovery centers, and 12-step meetings. From exploring Central Park to visiting the many museums and art galleries, New York City offers a wealth of cultural opportunities for those in recovery. I love following @soberincentralpark on IG and staying up to date with all of the sober happenings in the big apple. Sober Curator Pro Tip: NYC is also home to one of our favorite sober influencers, Tawny Lara – aka the sober sexpert. Word on the sober street she has a new book coming out later this year! And if you’re looking to find in-person sober events and activities @bigvisionnyc will get you dialed in.

These are just a few examples of the many cities in the United States that offer a great quality of life for those in recovery. When choosing a city to live in, it’s important to consider the resources available for recovery, as well as the overall atmosphere and culture of the city. It’s also important to connect with a community of like-minded individuals who are also committed to living a sober life.
