Mary Wise is a writer, speaker, activist, public health change maker, and a marathon runner. She is also a substance use, trauma, and maternal behavioral health subject matter expert and has presented at multiple conferences in the field. She holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in creative writing from Sarah Lawrence College and a second master’s in education (MA) from Rosemont College, as well as a bachelor’s in communications (BA) and a bachelor’s of science in nursing. Mary’s work is featured in P.S. I Love You, Thought Catalog, The Good Men Project, Scribe, The Partnered Pen, Publishous, Lumina, and Candour, among others. She’s been interviewed by the NBC News blog Better by Today and has been a guest blogger at places like the Mental Health Association in Delaware. In Mary’s past, she worked as an adjunct college professor, a registered nurse, and an editor for multiple publications, including hers.
On December 17, 2023, Mary celebrated 18 continuous years in recovery from alcoholism and has dedicated her life to the service of others. She began running races in 2022, shortly after divorcing and coming out as a lesbian woman; these were the last two “drinks” she needed to put down before she took that leap. Since her first 5k race, she’s been hooked, running a variety of lengths, including multiple half marathons and two full marathons. She lives in a suburb of Philadelphia, PA, with two teens and two cats. Her higher power is Olive.
