Travel about two hours northeast of the Salton Sea, and you’ll find yourself in one of the most quietly magical corners of California: Joshua Tree National Park. It’s where time slows down, the sunsets light up the desert sky in a wash of orange and lavender, and yes — there are Joshua trees as far as the eye can see.
Joshua Tree has a little something for everyone. It’s just under an hour from Palm Springs, nestled along the legendary I-10. Fair warning, though — this area has a wild side. People have been known to go missing out here, so stay sharp and respect the land. If you’re into true crime, well… you might find a few local legends to dive into.

The Joshua tree itself — Yucca brevifolia — is a quirky, spiky symbol of the Mojave Desert. The park is especially unique because it sits at the crossroads of two distinct desert ecosystems: the Colorado Desert (lower, hotter and drier) and the Mojave Desert (cooler and home to the iconic Joshua trees). Through millions of years of geological activity — plate tectonics, volcanic shifts and rising magma — Joshua Tree now spans more than 800,000 acres of rugged rock formations, wide open skies and ancient desert life.

Make a stop at one of the visitor centers (there’s one near Twentynine Palms and another at the West Entrance) to grab a map — it’s worth having if you want to hit all the highlights. Skull Rock is a personal favorite — easy to find and the perfect spot to wander off trail a bit and let nature swallow you up.
There are more than 500 campsites scattered throughout the park, ranging from primitive tent sites to RV-friendly setups. Whether you’re stargazing from your sleeping bag or enjoying sunrise coffee, it’s the kind of place that reminds you how to just be. Speaking of coffee — don’t skip a stop at Joshua Tree Coffee Company in the nearby town of Joshua Tree (61738 Twentynine Palms Highway). Their locally roasted blends and laid-back vibe are the perfect way to start or end your day.
While you’re in the area, swing by Pioneertown, just a short drive away. Built in 1946 as a Hollywood Old West movie set, it’s now a funky little stop with real shops, live music at Pappy & Harriet’s, and a dusting of desert charm. Great for families or just for anyone with a soft spot for the weird and wonderful.
Bottom line? If you find yourself anywhere near the Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree is a must. It’s not just a park — it’s a vibe. And honestly, I’ll let the pictures do the rest of the talking.

Next up: Washington state, starting later this summer. Think waterfalls, evergreens, and maybe a few Bigfoot sightings. Until then, may your travels be full, wild and just a little off the beaten path.
