Detroit may be known for muscle cars and Motown, but Eastern Market Brewing Company is making a case for adding non-alcoholic beer to Motor City’s legacy. Hailing from the heart of Michigan’s largest public market, Eastern Market Brewing Company thrives on innovation, offering a variety of craft creations for beer lovers of all kinds. While Michigan hasn’t quite hit the gas on the non-alcoholic scene, Eastern Market Brewing Company is throwing its hat in the ring, and this week, we’re taking a sip of their sour side.
How Does It Pour? How Does It Smell?
This week, we’re drinking Tangerine Sour from Eastern Market Brewing Company. Pouring a classic golden hue that looks like it should come with a side of sunshine, this beer hits the nose with a bold burst of orange peel. The aroma sets the stage for a citrus-forward experience, but it doesn’t quite prepare you for the shock to your system that follows. The light and sharp mouthfeel make it clear—this one isn’t here to play nice.
How Does it Taste?
Eastern Market Brewing Company’s Tangerine Sour doesn’t just flirt with tartness—it puts on a full-court press. The tangerine flavor leans more toward a sweeter lemon, but the real star is the sour itself. This beer grabs hold of your taste buds and doesn’t let go, yanking the saliva straight from your glands like a space-sucking-sour-saurus. If you like your sours actually to be, you know, sour, this one delivers in a big way.
Untappd gives Tangerine Sour from Eastern Market Brewing Company a 3.6 out of 5, but I rate it a 4.3. As someone who doesn’t usually reach for sours, I have to tip my cap—this one is fantastic. The fruit notes are present, but the tartness steals the spotlight, making for a face-puckering, mouth-watering ride. It’s also refreshing to see a Detroit brewery stepping into the non-alcoholic space, proving that Michigan might be revving its engine for an NA revolution.
